What I learned from “The Art of Books”

I love buying “Art Of” books, I love collecting each one mainly for inspiration and learning, but also for the pleasure of owning a minuscule part of this beautiful animated industry, and maybe one day I can leave this books as a lovely memory for my kids. Sometimes I buy the book, go over a couple of pages when I receive it, and then put it on a shelf next to the others for that day when I will need it for a project or just to be inspired for a personal project.

You remember the 3d romantic scene I did in November entitled She Didn’t Say Goodbye? Well, it got Featured in… wait for it… 3D World Magazine Issue nr 152!

YES, I know! Woohooooooooooooooooo! I was so happy when I got an email from the guys at 3D world magazine saying that they would love to publish my “She Didn’t Say Goodbye” piece! I couldn’t believe it! I was almost floating with joy. Imagine my face when I saw the digital magazine on my iPad!

Waiting for Santa concept was actually done last Christmas and I didn’t have time to 3d model it, texture and lighting before Christmas and in a way I’m glad I didn’t cause this year I have learned so much and my modeling and lighting techniques have become so much better!

This scene actually started from a lighting exercise I was doing using VRay for Maya. I wanted to create a simple night light rig setup, and it started as a really simple scene. I showed it around to a friend of mine who is a great matte painter and he gave me some pointers and feedback on how a balcony overlooking a city scene should look like and he sent me lots of reference examples, but the most important thing that I got from our discussion was “ This scene works only if it tells a story with characters, otherwise it’s just a simple 3d scene”.
